Y., Jan. 24, 1820; died in New York city, June 18, 1869. In 1841 he became an associate editor of the newly established "New York Tribune," and in 1851 he founded the "New York Times." He was a member of the state legislature, 1849-50, and was lieutenant-governor of New York, 1855-57, He took a very active part in the founding of the Republican party, and in his public addresses and in his newspaper he vigorously supported the election of Lincoln and subsequently the war measures of the administration.
