LUKE 111. 13-19.

whatsoever ye would that men should | do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets, Matt. vii. 12. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth, Eph. iv. 28.

VER. 14.

Ἐπηρώτων δὲ αὐτὸν καὶ στρατευόμενοι, λέγοντες· Καὶ ἡμεῖς τί ποιήσομεν ; Kal εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς· Μηδένα διασείσητε, μηδὲ συκοφαντήσητε· καὶ ἀρκεῖσθε τοῖς ὀψνίοις ὑμῶν.

And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be bcontent with your twages.

Προσδοκῶντος δὲ τοῦ λαοῦ, καὶ διαλογιζομένων πάντων ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις αὐτῶν περὶ τοῦ Ἰωάννου, μήποτε αὐτὸς εἴη ὁ Χριστὸς·

And as the people were in *expectation, and all men tmused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

John answered, saying unto them all, a I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the

[I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire, Matt. iii. 11. And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, Mark i. 7, 8. VER. 17.

Οὗ τὸ πτύον ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ διακαθαριεῖ τὴν ἅλωνα αὐτοῦ· καὶ συνάξει τὸν σῖτον εἰς τὴν ἀποθήκην αὑτοῦ· τὸ δὲ ἄχυρον κατακαύσει πυρὶ ἀσβέστῳ.

a Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. VER. 18.

Πολλὰ μὲν οὖν καὶ ἕτερα παρακαλῶν εὐηγγελίζετο τὸν λαόν.

And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

VER. 19.

Ὁ δὲ Ἡρώδης ὁ τετράρχῆς, ἐλεγχόμενος ὑπ ̓ αὐτοῦ περὶ Ἡρωδιάδος τῆς γυναικὸς Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ, καὶ περὶ πάντων ὧν ἐποίησε πονηρῶν ὁ ̓Ηρώδης,

But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,

VER. 20.

Προσέθηκε καὶ τοῦτο ἐπὶ πᾶσι, καὶ κατέκλεισε τὸν Ἰωάννην ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ.

Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

VER. 21.

̓Εγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ βαπτισθῆναι ἅπαντα τὸν λαὸν, καὶ Ἰησοῦ βαπτισθέντος, καὶ προσευχομένου, ἀνεῳχθῆναι τὸν οὐρανὸν,

• Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

[Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbade him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And, lo, a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, Matt. iii. 13-17. And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him: And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, Mark i. 9-11.]

VER. 22.

Καὶ καταβῆναι τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον σωματικῷ εἶδει, ὡσεὶ περιστερὰν, ἐπ ̓ αὐτόν·

κησα.

And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him; and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

VER. 6.

And the devil said unto him, All this

power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

[And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me, Matt. iv. 9.]

Σὺ οὖν ἐὰν προσκυνήσῃς ἐνώπιόν μου, ἔσται σου πάντα.

If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ, εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ὕπαγε ὀπίσω μου Σατανά· γέγραπταί γάρο Προσκυνήσεις Κύριον τὸν Θεόν καὶ αὐτῷ μόνῳ λατρεύσεις.

And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

[And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and

and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he

healed them. And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judæa, and from beyond Jordan, Matt. iv. 23-25. Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the Gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent ye, and believe the Gospel, Mark i. 14, 15. Then, when he was come into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast, John iv. 45.]

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, a as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
