There is but little call to laud the men who have written the books catalogued below. They have done good work-work that needs no bush; and mankind is under obligations to them for a large sum-total of enjoyment. It will be a long day before we, in England, forget the names of Thomas Hood, Albert Smith, Reach, and the Mayhews; and from America we hail, as exponents of genuine and special humour, Artemus Ward, J. R. Lowell, Bret Harte, and Charles Dudley Warner, all of whose writings will be found included in the following list, entertaining company of genial jesters and merry penmen.

PREFACE.

THIS Book is intended to be, in the strictest sense, what its title

66

imports, a Book of Reference," for desk use, supplying exact

and concise information respecting subjects in which every man of business is directly interested. A "Dictionary of Commerce " is always of the highest utility; a "Ready Reckoner" is simply indispensable; and the two combined in one handy volume must, the publishers believe, be acceptable in every counting house and place of business. An account of the national productions and manufactures which form the staple of commerce is accompanied by explanations of commercial terms, modes of transacting business, and a description of the principal ports and markets of the world. The beginner in commercial life may here find a convenient key to the otherwise intricate ramifications of business transactions, and the experienced merchant will be able, by a ready reference, to dispense with elaborate calculations as to cost, interest, profit and loss, and other matters of the highest importance; and various tables of useful business information add to the value of the book.
