INTRODUCTION.

IN December, 1870, my brother requested me to prepare a record of the Hubbard Family, extending back to our grandfather, for we had no definite knowledge beyond him. All that was then contemplated was a brief record on a single sheet of paper.

I had learned from my aunt, Mrs. Anna Hubbard Clough, now in her eighty-sixth year, that my great-grandfather, Nathan Hubbard, was born in Concord, Mass.; but of the time, she had no knowledge. Even tradition was silent in regard to any one beyond him.

I resolved to visit Concord, though I had but very little hope of obtaining any additional information; but I felt that it would be some satisfaction to make the effort, even if I failed. I was directed to Mr. Ebenezer Hubbard, who occupies the old homestead, among the first houses built in the town, which is said to be nearly two hundred and fifty years old.

Mr. Hubbard gave me some very important information in regard to the first Hubbard who settled in the town, tracing his ancestry back to about the year 1600; but I found nothing in regard to the special object of my search. I then called on George Heywood, Esq., the obliging townclerk, who, in a few moments, gave me the key that unlocked the whole mystery. This information led me to adopt this form of publication instead of that first proposed.
