may truly glorify thee, and that they may enjoy thee for ever.

Minister. O Lord our God, be pleased to grant unto us all, thy bountiful blessing, through what we have been engaged in at this time, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Assembly-O Lord, graciously smile on us through our thus waiting upon thee in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Minister-Now, may the God of Abraham of Isaac and of Jacob, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, be with us all evermore: amen.

Assembly-Amen, and amen.

ADMONITION OF CHILDREN.

Minister.-Let us sing to the praise and the glory of God:-" With humble heart &c." [pronouncing the two first lines of the following hymn :-or, referring to some other, and pronouncing the two first lines of it.] [All stand.]

1. With humble heart and tongue,
Our God to thee we pray,

O make us learn whilst we are young,
How we may cleanse our way.

[blocks in formation]

6. To what thy Law imparts,

Be our whole soul inclined;
O let it dwell within our hearts,
And sanctify our mind.

7. May thy young servants learn,
By these to cleanse their way,
And may we here the path discern,
That leads to endless day.

[The assembly sit.]

Minister. Let us now read a selection of Passages from the Word of God bearing upon this Ordinance. Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them. [Ecclesiastes, 12: 1.]

Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word.-With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.-Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. -Blessed art thou, O Lord: Teach me thy statutes. -[Psalm 119: 9-12.]

And thou, Solomon, my son, know thou the God of thy father; and serve him with a perfect heart, and with a willing mind: for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.-[1 Chronicles, 28: 9.]

Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.[Ephesians, 6: 1-3.]

Children obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.-[Colossians, 3: 20.] Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father,

and keep my sabbaths: I am the Lord your God.— [Leviticus, 19: 3.]

My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother. For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck. My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.-[Proverbs, 1: 8, 10.]

My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: for length of days, and long life, and peace shall they add to thee. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: so shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not to thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.-[Proverbs, 3: 1-7.]

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandize of it is better than the merchandize of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies and all the things thou canst desire, are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.-[Proverbs, 3: 13-17.]

For

My son attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding; that thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge. the lips of a strange woman drop as a honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil; but her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two edged sword. Her feet go down to death, her steps take hold on hell.--[Proverbs, 13: 1-5.]

My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother: bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck. When thou goest it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk

with thee. For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life. [Proverbs, 6: 20-23.]

But, continue thou in the things which thou hast learned, and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; and that from a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation, through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect throughly furnished unto all good works-[2 Timothy, 3: 14-17.]

As Moses lifted up the Serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil, hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth, cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.-[John 3: 14-21.]

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared unto all men, teaching us, that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all
