97. RICHARD LEACH (Samuel, John, Richard, Lawrence'), of Beverly, Mass., born at Rial-side, Apr. 1716 and baptized at Salem, 3 June 1716; died at Marblehead, 1801. His will proved 21 Feb. 1801, mentions sons: "Henry, William, Richard; daughter Mary Drinkwater; gr.-son Samuel, son of Josiah; gr.-dau., Polly Hooper, wife of Nathaniel Hooper, and gr.-son Azor Mitchell son of my late daughter Sarah Mitchell. Nathan Bower, John Drury, and Benj. Thompson, Witnesses. Henry Soule Executor."

He married first 4 Dec. 1738, Martha Woodbury, born 1720; died 1756; daughter of Josiah and Lydia (Herrick) Woodbury; secondly 27 Dec. 1759, Elizabeth Stevens of Topsfield, Mass. Children born at Beverly:

James Reed's Co., mustered according to a return dated 11 Oct. 1756 by Henry Leddel, Muster Master General of the Provincial Army, raised for an expedition against Crown Point." He was reported dead but "American Ancestry Vol. x, says that they had 11 children."

100. JOHN LEACH (Amos, James, James, Lawrence'), of Fairfield, Vt.. born at "Leach Hollow" New Fairfield, Ct., 10 Aug. 1735; died at Fairfield, Vt., 27 June, 1811, (gravestone in Bradley cemetery). He married first 2 Apr. 1760, Martha Wanzer, at New Fairfield, Ct.. by Justice Ephraim Hubble; and secondly 9 July, 1772, Hannah Page, at New Fairfield Ct., by Justice Ephraim Hubble; born 15 Feb. 1750; died 1 Dec. 1823, at Fairfield, Vt.

He was one of the first settler's of the town of Fairfield, Vt. At a proprietor's meeting 2 Oct. 1788, he was chosen collector, and one of a committee for laying out and cutting the first roads in town. He was an enterprising and useful citizen.

101. JOANNA LEACH (Amos, James, James, Lawrence'), of Fairfield, Vt., born at "Leach Hollow" New Fairfield, Ct., and died at Fairfield, Vt. She married 25 Aug. 1757, Thomas Northrop, at New Fairfield, Ct., by Justice Ephraim Hubbell. Thomas Northrop was one of the original proprietor's of the town of Fairfield, Vt., and came from New Fairfield (now Sherman) Ct., with the early settlers; before 1791. He settled on an uncleared tract of land, cleared a large space, and built a log house. In 1800 he built a frame barn, the timbers of which was marked and numbered for the builders use. 1814, he built a two-story house 33 x 44 ft., which contained eight huge fire places, a house which at that time was probably considered quite a mansion. At the time of the battle of Plattsburg his son Harmon was drawing the lumber for its construction. At a town meeting held 13 Mar. 1791, he was chosen

selectman, and afterwards held nearly all the offices of his town. D. Hamilton Hurd in his History of Fairfield County, Ct., on pages 684 to 692, mentions this family, and states that: “Mr. Thomas Northrop, who has long resided in Vermont, during the last year paid a visit to his native place, and walked all the way from Gaylordsville, four miles, although he is eighty-four years old."

Hurd says that they had 7 children born at New Fairfield,

Amos, b. 1765; d. Apr. 1848; m. Zurah3 Hungerford, b. at New Fairfield, Ct., 1763; d. at Fairfield, Vt., 18 Feb. 1832, daughter of Samuel and Mary (Graves). Samuel Hungerford was the original grantee of three towns in Franklin Co., Vt., namely, Fairfield, Smithfield (now a part of Fairfield,) and Hungerford (now Sheldon).

Amos Northrop came to Fairfield, Vt., with the settlers of 1792. He cleared the land, and built the house which was later owned by Thomas Hale. Here he resided until his death. The place was 1-2 mile south-west, and across the Beaver Meadow from his father's place.

Mr. Northrop started to market, at Plattsburg, with a load of oats, in 1812, and upon his arrival there was pressed into the service of the United States, and was sent with his team to Sackett's Harbor, to transport soldiers and supplies. He was retained from home from January until March. During a portion of this time he was obliged to camp in the forest with no protection from the weather, and thereby had his feet frozen so badly that a portion of the right foot had to be amputated. He was a man well respected, and held nearly all the offices of his town, was selectman in 1796-1797 and 1798. Children. 1. Isaac, b. 1785, in New Fairfield, Ct., m. Certificate on reverse dated Plym" ss., 22 Apr. 1760, signed James Warren, Commissary of Musters stating that said Leach and others had been mustered, attested and delivered to Mr. John Weston Jr.; also on a return of men enlisted and impressed for the Expedition against Crown Point, agreeable to the order of His Excellency William Shirley Esq., of 15 Apr. 1756 (Regt. not given, endorsed Col.
