He went to Bridgewater, in 1661, having bought, in 1660, three proprietary, or original purchase rights: George Soule's, Moses Simmons', and Philip Delano's. At the time of his death which occurred in 1688, he owned five original purchase rights."

His wife Susanna, daughter of Abraham Shaw of Dedham, died at Bridgewater in 1698.

Capt. Nicholas, m. in 1676, Mary, daughter of Samuel Edison. He was one of the jury, named by the court, in 1667 to be empannelled to lay out all ways requisite in the town of Bridgewater. His son Capt. Ebenezar Byram, represented Bridgewater in the General Court 1738, 1739-41.

17. DAVID LEACH (Giles,' Lawrence'), born at West Bridgewater, Mass. died 1757, at his residence at Bridgewater. He married at Bridgewater, Hannah daughter of Thomas and Abigail (Bryam) Whitman. After his death his widow married second in 1758, Ebenezar Edson, born in 1727.

Thomas Whitman was son of John Whitman, Esq., one of the early settlers of Weymouth, Mass., a very respectable man; the first Deacon; the first military officer, (an ensign), appointed in the town; one of the three persons appointed by the Governor, to end small controversies. He died there in 1692 aged 90.

18. JOHN' LEACH (Giles, Lawrence'), born at West Bridgewater, Mass. in 1665; died 1743. He married Alice....

;

He was a farmer, and resided in the south part of the town of Bridgewater. 3 Mar. 1701-2 the Selectmen were ordered "to lay out a highway from the Taunton road on the other side of 4 mile Brook, to John Leach's house, and so, to Taunton line.”

In 1742, he was chosen a Juryman of the Plymouth Co., Court, but does not appear to have held any public office.

The inventory of his estate was filed 6 Feb. 1744, The estate appraised at 341 pounds. In the settlement of the estate, his son Giles Leach took the homestead, and settled with the other heirs.

EBENEZER LEACH (Giles, Lawrence'), born at West Bridgewater, Mass., in 1672; died there in 1750. His will dated 6 Nov. 1745, was proved 2 Apr. 1750. His estate was settled by his son Ebenezer. He married 17 Dec. 1707, Prudence Stetson, at Scituate, Mass., where she was born Sept. 1678; daughter of Joseph and Prudence Stetson, and grand-daughter of Cornet Robert Stetson of Scituate. Robert was one of the leading men of the town, and in 1659 was commissioned Cornet of the first troop of horse raised in Plymouth Colony, Capt. William Bradford, son of Gov. Bradford, being the commander of the same.

20. BENJAMIN' LEACH ESQ. (Giles, Lawrence1), born at West

Bridgewater, Mass. (date of birth I have not found) d. 13 July 1764, P. R. 106. He married 8 Sept. 1702, Hepzibah d. 4 Apr. 1750 P. R. 106 daughter of Joseph' and Hannah' (Latham) Washburn. "Hepzibah' Washburn, was gt.-gr. dau. of Hon. John Washburn 1st sec. Mass. Bay colony and of John Winslow of Boston, shipping merchant, deputy and mem. of council of war, and of Mary (Chilton) Winslow of the "Mayflower" 1620, gt.-gt.-gr.-dau. of Francis Cook of the "Mayflower" 1620". On 31 Dec. 1702, in a deed, in which he is described as "youngest son" his father conveyed to him "all his” (then father's) "home living," consisting of 32 acres "lying between lands of Jonathan Ames and Samuel Kinsley”, and an equal portion with his brothers in certain other lands. In 1720, 1728, and 1734, other lands were conveyed to him.

SARAH LEACH (Robert, Robert, Lawrence'), born at Manchester, Mass., 11 June, 1680; married 29 Jan. 1698, Ezekiel,* son of John3 Knowlton and Bethiah Curtis; William,' and Elizabeth; William,' and Ann Elizabeth (Smith). William and Elizabeth Knowlton "of Ipswich, 1640, came from Chirwick, Co., of Kent, England." Felt says: "He was the head of a highly respectable family." John Knowlton settled in Manchester in 1684; was Selectman there in 1700, 05, 07, 08, 18; Town Clerk in 1714; Representaive in 1717. See map in Lamson's History of Manchester for the Knowlton estate.

Ezekiel Knowlton was born in 1679; drowned at Sable Isle, 1719.

ROBERT LLACH Lover, Liber Lawrence - born at Manchester, Mass. 26 Feb. 1682; died Nov. 2760, at sea, in West Indies. Ee married three times: first 25 Mar. 1704, Mary, daughter of Zone Lobinson, of Boston: serondy 22 Jan. 1713, Elizabeti. Easking of Beverly; and thirdy 28 Feb. 1725-6, Elizabeth Alien, b. 1 MET, 699.

In 177 he inherited the estate deeded zo his father by the town, in 1704. See map in Lamson & Eistory of Manchester) Clay Brook runs across the northern part of it. Ajoining it on the west, is the estate on which Robert settled in 1656, which later became the property of Samuel now owned by Osborne Lawrence Leach.

Mr. Leach was known as Robert, Jr., and was Selectman of the town in 1706 to 14, and again in 1727.

MARY LEACH (Robert," Robert," Lawrence"), born at Manchester, Mass., 18 Mar. 1690. She married 4 Dec. 1712, Robert Haskell, grandson of Capt. William Haskell, one of the original planters of Gaoucester, Mass., ranking with the most prominent men of

the town, being chosen one of the two first deacons of the Gloucester church, a Representative to the General Court, and serving many years in the office of Selectman "and holding commissions in the military first as Lieutenant, and then as Captain." "The public offices to which he was elected, afford sufficient proof that he was a prominent and useful citizen."

JOSEPH LEACH (Robert, Robert, Lawrence1), of Manchester, Mass., born there 4 June, 1694; died there 31 July, 1784. married 16 Dec. 1715, Patience Littlefield, who died soon after birth of her 6th child Elizabeth; Manchester 1st church record under date of 13 Sept. 1719, says: "Patience Leach renewed her vow, and had her child Rachel baptized."

27. PAUL LEACH (Robert, Robert, Lawrence'), of Manchester, Mass., born at Manchester 11 May, 1698; died there 8 Jan. 1773. His will was proved 26 Jan. 1773; mentions sons Joseph, and Robert; daughters Anne, Hannah and Elizabeth; dec. son Paul's Children. Witnesses: Joseph Knight, Jr., Jos. Whipple and Hannah Coy. He married three times: first 2 March, 17256, Rebecca Knight, who died in 1742; secondly 26 July, 1742, Lydia Hooper, who died 15 Jan. 1750, aged 36; and thirdly 15 Jan. 1750-1 Sarah Kelley. Manchester 1st church record saya under date of 16 July, 1738: "Rebecca wife of Paul Leach and 4 children: Rebecca, Daniel, Paul and Anne were baptized.”

He was a shipwright, a man of herculean build, and great strength and courage. Stories of feats of muscular power are told of him. Some of them are probably mythical but not without a foundation in fact.
