In this Edition of Arnould on Marine Insurance, a return has been made, as far as possible, to the form of the Second Edition, being the last for which Sir Joseph Arnould was himself responsible, and it is that Edition which the present Editors have taken as the basis of their work, as regards both arrangement and text. Sir Joseph Arnould's language, however, though of great literary merit, was certainly diffuse; and the retention of his text without abridgment would have necessitated a substantial increase in the size of these volumes, which as it is exceed all previous Editions by some 300 pages. The Editors were, therefore, glad to avail themselves of the work of compression which had been performed with great judgment by the late Mr. David Maclachlan.
