(1) If we look about us, may some say, we may fometimes obferve od and upright Men in a poor and afflicted Condition; how therefore are efe Promifes made good to them? I anfwer: The Promife of the Life which to come, unfpeakable Joy and Happiness in the Kingdom and Prefence God when Time fhall be no more, is abfolutely made to them.

beft; but Time and Obfervation often convince us, that they rob us of our Peace, and prove a Temptation too ftrong for us. Whether therefore Riches or Poverty, Profperity or Adverfity are beft, is known one ly to God, who is never wanting to them who love him, and who makes all things work together for their good. If therefore Profperity is beft, they may reft fatisfied, that God, in his wife and good Providence, will in due time make them profperous; if Adverfity and Poverty, they have the greatest Reafon to be contented and thankful, knowing that God would better their Condition, and deliver them out of their Straits and Difficulties, were it upon the whole beft for them. The Fromifs there fore, as it refpects this Life, is only conditional,
