Where was the mount of Olives? CHAP. XXV. The parable of the ten virgins, 14 and of the talents. 31 Also the description of the last judgment. THEN shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps and went forth to meet the bridegroom. 2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: 4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5 While the bridegroom tarried they all slumbered and slept. 6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. 7 Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. 42 T Watch, therefore; for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. 9 But the wise answered, saying, 43 But know this, that if the good Not so; lest there be not enough for man of the house had known in what us and you; but go ye rather to them watch the thief would come he would that sell, and buy for yourselves. have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the mar 4 Carcass, the Jewish nation dead in tres-riage; and the door was shut. passes and sins. 5 Eagles, the Roman armies, on whose banners was displayed the eagle. 11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. Questions. Repeat the parable of the ten virgins. By what parable does our Lord teach our obligation to improve in his service all the blessings that we receive? What will the Lord say at the day of judgment to those on his right hand? What to those on his left? CHAP. XXVI. 1 The rulers conspire against Jesus; 14 Judas selleth him. 17 Jesus eateth the passover. AND it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings he said unto his disciples, 2 Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover,1 and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified. 3 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Cai'aphas, 4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. 5 But they said, Not on the feastday, lest there be an uproar among the people. 6 Now when Jesus was in Beth'any, in the house of Simon the leper, 7 There came unto him a woman having an alabaster-box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head as he sat at meat. 8 But when his disciples saw it they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? 9 For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. 10 When Jesus understood it he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me. 11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. 3 Minister, to wait on, to serve, assist. 1 The Passover was a feast of the Jews, instituted in commemoration of the deliverance of the Israelites from Egyptian bondage. And they covenanted3 with him for thirty pieces of silver.4 16 And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him. 17 T Now, the first day of the feast of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? 18 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; 1 will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples. 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover. 20 Now, when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve. 21 And as they did eat he said, Verily I say unto you, That one of you shall betray me. 22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? 23 And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. 24 The Son of man goeth, as it is written of him; but wo unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. 25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said. 26 T And, as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and 3 Covenanted, agreed. 4 A piece of silver, about 66 2-3 cents; so that our Saviour was betrayed for about 20 dollars. 5 The feast of unleavened bread was an appendage to the Passover, or it was a feast, which in connexion was immediately to succeed it. It continued seven days, during which po leavened or fermented bread was to be eaten, to commemorate the Hebrews' hasty departure from Egypt, before their dough could be leavened. Likewise also said all the disciples. 36 ¶ Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsem'ane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. 37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful, and very heavy. 38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death; tarry ye here, and watch with me. 48 Now, he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; hold him fast. 49 And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, Master; and kissed him. 50 And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. 51 And behold one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest, and smote off his ear. 52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place; for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. 53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels ?10 54 But how then shall the scrip39 And he went a little farther, and tures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O 55 In that same hour said Jesus to my Father, if it be possible, let this the multitudes, Are ye come out, as cup pass from me; nevertheless, not against a thief, with swords and staves as I will, but as thou wilt. for to take me?
