1781 RESOLUTION, Schooner. Guns, 6; Men, 25. Mar. 31 Commander: Amos Potter, of Boston. C. C. 196, XIII, 4; M. A., XL, 102, 171, 360; Boston Gazette, May 14, 1781: "Thursday last returned into Port the Privateer Schooner Resolution, Capt. Potter, late Master, having taken a Schooner laden with Dry Goods, etc. During her Cruize off Halifax Harbour she fell in with a Ship of between 4 and 500 Tons, with Twelve 4-pounders and 23 Men (three of which were Sick) laden with English Goods, bound from London for Halifax; and it being a dead Calm, she row'd up within Call of the Ship, when the Commander hail'd, Whence from? Answer, Halifax. After which the following Discourse. Is two Ships (naming them) arrived there? A. Yes. Will you come on board? My Boat is leaky, but if you will send your Boat on board, I will come. Accordingly the Capt. of the Ship sent his Boat with the second Mate and Boatswain on Board the Schooner and after taking a Glass together, the Boat returned to the Ship. After which the Captain of the Ship desired Captain Potter to come on board and spend the Evening, it being a fine Night, to which he replied he would; when the Boat was again sent and he went on board. But before he embarked, he told his Crew to lay the Schooner alongside and board her as soon as he had got on board. The Boatswain overhearing him, kept it to himself 'till they got on board the Ship and then cry'd, 'A Traitor.' On which the Ship prepar'd for Action and an Engagement ensued, when the Ship shot away the Resolution's Foremast and she row'd off, otherwise the Ship would have been captured. They carried off Capt. Potter with them." 1781 RESOLUTION, Schooner. Guns, 4; Men, 30. Commander: John Savage, of Boston. Owners: George Stillman and others, of Machias. C. C. 196, XIII, 5; M.
