Foster and Jeremiah O'Brien.) "In the House of
Representatives Aug. 21, 1775. Whereas the In-
habitants of Machias have been at considerable ex-
pense in fixing two Armed Vessels for the Defense of
the Sea coasts. . . . Therefore Resolved that proper
Officers be commissioned to take Command of said
Vessels... and that Said Officers and Seamen
shall be under such Pay of this Colony as shall here-
after be allowed . . . [Aug. 23] Resolved that there
be Paid out of the Public Treasury of this Colony to
Capt. Jeremiah Obrian, appointed Commander of
the armed Schooner Diligent and of the Sloop
Machias Liberty, now lying in the Harbour of Ma-
chias, . .
the Sum of One Hundred and Sixty
Pounds . . . for supplying the Men with Provi-
