both sexes, who were on board the Mercury packet,
from Lisbon to Falmouth, prize to the Cicero priva-
teer, of Salem in New England, Hugh Hill, comman-
der, desire us to be the instruments of their gratitude,
in publishing that as well from the captain and offi-
cers as the crew, they have received the most civil,
humane, and even noble treatment." Ibid., Jan. 28,
1782: "Capt. Hill, in the letter of marque ship
Cicero, arrived at Beverly on Monday last, in six
weeks from Bilboa. . . . In Captain Hill came
Passengers, Col. John Trumbull, Son of his Excel-
lency the Governor of Connecticut, and Master John
[Quincy] Adams, Son of his Excellency John Adams,
Esq., both of which Gentlemen arrived in this Town
