and Jennessee, at intervals, between the years 1852 and
1867.

In 1867, settled in Chicago. Was there one of the
writing editors of Chicago Tribune for a short time;
next, one of the writing editors of Chicago Republican
for
two years,
then its editor-in-chief & few months.
In 1870, began to devote myself wholly to the tariff
questim; became editor of the Bureare - a

-trectimist.

magazine after the great Chicago fire
1871 until the publication ceased with the issue of the
number for July, 1872.

In 1873, became tariff editor of Chicago Inter-Ocean,
outinuing about seven years. This was the first position
of that specific name in the Tuited States, unless the com-
