Spoil, his Partners having had their Portions, be restoreth to the King of Sodom. Ver. 17 7A ND h the King of Sodom went out to meet Abram (after his Return from the Slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the Kings that were with him) at the Valley of Shaveh, which is the King's Dale. 18 And MELCHISEDEK King of SALEM brought forth Bread and Wine and he was the PRIEST of the MOST HIGH GOD. 19 And he BLESSED him, and faid, Blessed be Abram of the MOST HIGH GOD, Poffeffor of Heaven and Earth: 20 And blessed be the MOST HIGH GOD, which hath delivered thine Enemies into thy Hand. And he gave him Tithes of all. Heb. vii. For this MELCHISEDEK King of Salem, PRIEST of the MOST HIGH GOD, who met Abraham returning from the Slaughter of the Kings, and blessed him: 2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth Part of all: first being by Interpretation KING OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, and after that also, KING OF SALEM, which is KING OF PEACE; 3 Without Father, without Mother, without Defcent, having neither BEGINNING of Days, nor End of Life ; but made like unto the Son Of GOD, abideth a PRIEST continually. 4 Now consider how great this Man was, unto whom even the Patriarch Abraham gave the Tenth of the Spoils. s And verily they that are of the Sons of Levi, who receive the Office of the Priesthood, have a Commandment to take Tithes of the People according to the Law, that is, of their Brethren, though they come out of the Loyns of Abraham: 6 But he whose DESCENT is not counted from them, received Tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the Promises. 21 And the King of Sodom faid unto Abram, Give me the Perfons, and take the Goods to thy felf. 22 And Abram faid to the King of Sodom, I have lift up mine Hand unto the LORD, the MOST HIGH GOD, the Poffeffor of Heaven and Earth, 23 That I will not take from a Thread even to a Shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, left thou shouldst say, I have made Abram rich: 24 Save only that which the young Men have eaten, and the Portion of the Men which went with me, Aner, Estr col, and Mamre; let them take their Portion. • GOD encourageth Abram. 2 Abram complaineth for want of an Heir. 4 GOD promiseth him a Son, and a multiplying of bis Seed. 6 Abram is justified by Faith. 7 Canaan is promised again, and confirmed by a Sign, 12 and a Vifion. Ver. 1 A FTER these Things the Word of the Lorn came unto Abram in a VISION, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy SHIELD, and thy exceeding great RE WARD. 2 And Abram faid, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, feeing I go CHILDLESS, and the Steward of my House is this Eliezer of Damafcus ? 3 And Abram faid, Behold, to me thou hast given No SEED: and lo, one born in my House is mine Heir. 4 And behold, the WORD of the LORD came unto him, faying, This shall not be thine Heir, but he that shall come forth out of thine own Bowels shall be thine Heir. 5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward Heaven, and tell the STARS, if thou be able to NUMBER them: and he faid unto him, So shall thy SEED be. 6 And he BELIEVED in the LORD; and he counted it to him for RIGHTEOUSNESS. 7 And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of the Land of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this Land to inherit it. 8 And he faid, LORD GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it? 9 And he said unto him, Take me an Heifer of three Years old, and a She-goat of three Years old, and a Ram of three Years old, and a Turtle-dove, and a young Pigeon. 10 And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the Midst, and laid each Piece one against another: but the Birds divided he 14 For if they which are of the Law be HEIRS, FAITH is made void, and the PROMISE made of none Effect. 15 Because the Law worketh Wrath: for where no Law is, there is no Tranfgreffion. 16 Therefore it is of FAITH, that it might be by GRACE; to the END the PROMISE might be sure to all the Seed, not to that only which is of the Law, but to that also which is of the FAITH of ABRAHAM, who is the FATHER of us all, 17 (As it is written, I have made thee a FATHER of many Nations) before him whom he BELIEVED, even GOD Who QUICKNETH the DEAD, and calleth those Things which BE NOT, as though THEY WERE. not. 18 Who against HOPE, BELIEVED in Hope, that he might become the FATHER of many Nations; according : II And when the Fowls came down upon the Carcases, Abram drove them away. 12 And when the Sun was going down, a deep Sleep fell upon Abram; and lo, an Horror of great Darkness fell upon him. to that which was spoken, So shall thy Seed be 19 And being not weak in FAITH, he considered not his own Body now DEAD, when he was about an hundred Years old, neither yet the DEADNESS of Sarah's Womb. 20 He STAGGERED not at the PROMISE OF GOD through UNBELIEF; but was strong in FAITH, giving GLORY to GOD. 21 And being fully PERSWADED, that what he had PROMISED, he was ABLE also to perform. 22 And therefore it was IMPUTED to him for RIGHTEOUSNESS. 23 Now it was not written for his SAKE ALONE, that it was imputed to him; 24 But for US ALSO, to whom it shall be IMPUTED, if we BELIEVE On him that RAISED UP JESUS our LORD from the Dead, 25 Who was DELIVERED for our Offences, and was RAISED again for our JUSTIFICATION. Gal. iii. 6 Even as Abraham BELIEVED GOD, and it was accounted to him for RIGHTEOUSNESS. 7 Know ye therefore, that they which are of FAITH, the same are the CHILDREN of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture foreseeing that God would justify the HEATHEN through FAITH, preached before the Gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all NATIONS be BLESSED. 9 So then they which be of FAITH, are BLESSED with faithful Araham. 13 CHRIST hath redeemed us from the Curse of the Law, being made a Curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a Tree: 14 That the BLESSING of Abraham might come on the GENTILES through JESUS CHRIST; that we might receive the PROMISE of the SPIRIT through FAITH. John viii. 56 Abraham REJOYCED to see my Day, and he saw IT, and was glad. 57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty Years old, and haft thou seen Abraham? 58 And Jesus faith unto them, Before Abraham was, I AM. 13 And he faid unto Abram, Know of a Surety that thy Seed shall be a Stranger in a Land that is not theirs, and shall serve them, and they shall afflict them FOUR HUNDRED Years. * Als vii. 6 And God spake on this wife, That his SEED should fojourn in a strange Land, and that they should bring them into Bondage, and intreat them EVIL FOUR HUNDRED Years. 7 And he Nation to whom they shall be in Bondage, will I JUDGE, faid God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this Place. 14 And also that Nation whom they shall serve, will I JUDGE: and afterward shall they come out with great Substance. 15 And thou shalt go to thy Fathers in Peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old Age. 16 But in the fourth Generation they shall come hither again: for the Iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full. 17 And it came to pass, that when the Sun went down, and it was dark, behold, a smoaking Furnace, and 'a burning Lamp that passed between those Pieces. 18 In that same Day the Lord made a Covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy Seed have I given this Land, from the River of Egypt, unto the great River, the River Euphrates: 19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, 20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, 21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebufites. CHAP. XVI. 1 Sarai, being barren, giveth Hagar to Abram. 6 Hagar, being afflicted for despising her Mistress, runneth away : 9 An Angel sendeth her back to submit herself, 11 and telleth ber of her Child. 15 Ishmael is born. Ver. 1 N Gal. iv. 22. It is written, That Abraham had two Sons, the one by a Bond-maid, the other by a Free woman. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her Face. 7 And the Angel of the LORD found her by a Fountain of Water in the Wilderness, by the Fountain in the Way to Shur. 8 And he said, Hagar, Sarai's Maid, whence camest thou ? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the Face of my Mistress Sarai. 9 And the Angel of the Lord faid unto her, Return to thy Mistress, and submit thy felf under her Hands. 10 And the Angel of the Lord said unto her, I will multiply thy Seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbred for multitude. 11 And the Angel of the LORD faid unto her, Behold, thou art with Child, and shalt bear a Son, and shalt call his Name Ishmael; because the Lord hath heard thy Affliction. 12 m Gen. xxv. 18 And Uhmael died in the Presence of all his Brethren. m And he will be a wild Man; his Hand will be against every Man, and every Man's Hand against-him; and he shall dwell in the Prefence of all his Brethren. 13 And she called the Name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I alfo here looked after him that seeth me? 14 Wherefore the Well was called Beer-lahairoi. 15 And Hagar bare Abram a Son: and Abram called his Son's Name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael. 16 And Abram was fourscore and fix Years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram. 1 GOD reneweth the Covenant. 5 Abram's Name is changed, in Token of a greater Blessing. 10 Circumcifion is instituted. 15 Sarai's Name is changed, and she blessed. 16 Ifaac is promised. 23 Abraham and Ishmael are circumcised. |
