Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

A very useful book with much information particularly of help to those laying out worship services and considering the implications and historicity of various aspect of worship. As a pastor I have kept this close at hand for the value of simply referring to the various services for instance from the time of the Reformation where I can view them in chart form laid out much like a church bulletin. The book is indexed and well written. It's written by an Anglican who cares much about maintaining the meaning of the various parts of worship and not discarding things that have always and everywhere been a part of the worship of the church. As a pastor in the Reformed tradition I have appreciated having access to information about the liturgies at Strasbourg under Bucer and then Calvin, and also Geneva while Calvin was there, and Scottish worship as John Knox and then the Westminster Assembly had their impact. The Book of Common Prayer is present, along with medieval Western rites, and a little on the east. The patristic sources of our liturgical information on the eearly are covered in this work as well, and while it is somewhat dated it still holds its value in simply gathering together historical information and presenting it in a useful form. This has been the text used in many a class and used hardcovers can often be found on the secondary market of the internet even for under ten (US) dollars (try Bookfinder dot com). A definite must have for anyone interested in an overview of worship through the centuries. Go buy one somewhere right now! You'll be glad you did.
