(1) The Difficulty which Expofitors have thought to be in thefe Words, when compared with A. 1. 18. will be removed, if we fuppofe that what is there recorded, is a farther Account of what happened to Judas after he had hanged himself. And then the Senfe of both Places together will be, that Judas, having faftned the Rope, threw himself from the Place where he ftood, and fo hanged himfelf. After which, either the Rope, or that to which he faftned it, breaking, he fell down headlong, and with the Force of the Fall he burft afunder, and all his Bowels gufhed out.

(2) Thefe Words are not in Jeremy, but in Zachary. To remove this Difficulty, fome think that Zachary was likewife called Jeremy; for it was common among the Jews for the fame Perfon to have two, and fometimes three Names. See the Note on Mat. ro. 3. Others fuppofe that St.Matthew cites them as from Jeremy, becaufe his Prophecy ftood first in the Volume of Prophets, and fo any Paffage quoted out of that Volume might go by his Name. The Learned may meet with a fuller Account in Surex huius, on the Texts cited from the Old Testament in the New, pag. 280.
