CONDUCTED PRINCIPALLY BY THE EDITOR OF

CALMET'S DICTIONARY OF THE HOLY BIBLE.

"THE name of Calmet is very well known in the learned world. He passed a long life in incessant application to his studies. His mind was vigorous, and animated by the love of religion and virtue. He possessed a warm and benevolent regard for the happiness of mankind; and devoted himself with uncommon ardour to the examination of the Holy Scriptures; and as the fruits of his labours, he pub

lished in 1707, a COMMENTARY on all the books of the OLD and NEW TESTAMENT, in twenty three volumes, 4to. This work contains a vast fund of deep and curious learning; and Rondet published an abridgment of it in fourteen volumes, 4to. by which he acquired a considerable degree of reputation. Calmet's Preface and Dissertations have been printed separately in two volumes, 4to. He also published, 1750, a DICTIONARY OF THE HOLY BIBLE, Critical, Geographical, &c, in four volumes, folio. This work is much celebrated for the many admirable elucidations of difficult passages of the Holy Scriptures; for beautiful delineations of oriental manners, and for lively and entertaining histories, extracted from authors little known, even among the learned.” Monthly Review, 1797.

"If the quick sale of any book, and the many impressions and translations of it may be admitted as an argument in its favour, this Work must appear with great advantage; for within a few years after its publication, there were several editions of it in French, in Latin, in Dutch, in Italian, in Spanish, and in other languages. The encouragement with which it has been constantly received throughout Europe, has been very great; and from the time of its first publication to the present, the authority of father CALMET has ever been looked upon with great respect,”

To praise the celebrated DICTIONARY of CALMET, would be superfluous, and not less so to dwell upon the superior merits of the last English edition, which has received the concurrent testimony of all the Critical Journals. It also received the encouragement of christians of all denominations in England, so that a large impression was soon disposed of and a second demanded. The FRAGMENTS as they are called, by which the original work of Calmet is now augmented and continued, are a curious and inestimable collection of the most important Illustrations of Scripture, from travels in the East, since the time of Calmet. In consequence of the number of plates, this work is very expensive, and cannot be obtained in this country, at present, under about seventy dollars. In the present proposal of republishing the work here, it is be deved that the interests of Religion and Biblical Literature are consulted, and especially the circumstances of those to whom CAL. MET'S DICTIONARY would be peculiarly valuable and interesting. The present publisher hopes to be able to deliver the work to subscribers at a little more than half the price at which the English edition can be procured. The plates will be executed by the best artists

CONDITIONS.

This work will be comprised in four 4to. vols. to be printed on fine wove paper, and a new and ele gant type, cast expressly for the work. There will be one hundred and fifty engravings, "explanatory and illustrative." The price to subscribers will be nine dollars a volume, or thirty six dollars a set in boards, payable on the delivery of each volume, to enable the publisher to carry on the work. The English copy, as before observed, sells at about seventy dollars a set, in common binding, in every respect inferior to the present contemplated edition. A few copies will be struck off in a superior style, including the first impressions of the engravings, at twelve dollars a volume, or forty eight dollars a set, in boards. The price will be considerably enhanced to nonsubscribers. Those persons who procure subscribers for nine sets, and become accountable for the payment, shall receive a tenth gratis, and in that proportion for any number over five sets.

N. B Those persons who are disposed to interest themselves in obtaining subscribers for this work, may obtain subscription papers at the bookstore of I. Thomas, jun. Boston; or S. Etheridge, Jun. in Charlestown.
