MANNERS AND CUSTOMS NOTICED IN VARIOUS PASSAGES OF Holy Scripture, ILLUSTRATED BY EXTRACTS FROM THE WORKS OF TRAVELLERS. PUBLISHED UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE COMMITTEE OF GENERAL LITERATURE AND EDUCATION, SECOND EDITION. LONDON: PRINTED FOR THE SOCIETY FOR PROMOTING CHRISTIAN KNOWLEDGE; SOLD AT THE DEPOSITORY, GREAT QUEEN STREET, LINCOLN'S INN FIELDS; AND 4, ROYAL EXCHANGE; BODLEIAN 1 4 MAY 1931 LIBRAR LONDON: Printed by S. & J. BENTLEY, WILSON, and FLEY, Bangor House, Shoe Lane. a THE first Edition of this work appeared under the title of "Extracts from the Works of Travellers, Illustrative of various Passages in Holy Scripture." This title is now altered; the present volume being more exclusively devoted to description of the Domestic Habits of Eastern Nations. The chapters on Natural History and Agriculture are also omitted, as it is proposed to form them into a smaller work on these subjects. It is hoped that, as respects the subjects to which it is now confined, the book in its present form will be found more complete, both in matter andarrangement, than it was before. Many new Vignettes are introduced, with the view of interesting children in the subjects illustrated, and the Compiler has throughout endeavoured to put the Contents into such a form as to assist the Sunday-school teacher in his labours. The interest of a whole class is often awakened towards an important passage of Scripture, by their being made to understand the circumstances under which it was originally written, when they would otherwise have ignorantly passed it over without an idea of its force and application.
