In the actual state of the market, we are of opinion that something might without risk be done in Coffees, especially in St. Domingo. We have sent you a few samples, drawn in our presence, the quality of which appears perfectly satisfactory. We should be glad if your choice should fall on the superior quality, which will find fewer takers than the lower sorts, and may therefore be obtained proportionately on better terms.

119. Order not yet executed-Delay recommended.

Havre, 18..

Messrs. Bertrand & Co., Paris.

Gentlemen.

We have deemed it for your interest to defer all transactions for the moment. The holders of the two cargoes of Coffee ex l'Ernestine and la Dorade appear disinclined to sell, at least their demands are exorbitant. It is indeed true, that a few bags of St. Domingo second quality were sold yesterday and this morning, at a few centimes advance, this rising tendency at a moment when the supply is increasing is sufficiently indicative; but considering that these bargains were merely made to satisfy the momentary demand, the circumstance loses much of its importance. Our advice is therefore further delay. The

upward tendency cannot be serious, and most assuredly in a few days prices will assume a more reasonable standard, in harmony with the actual state of affairs.

Respectfully Yours &c.

P. S. While closing our letter, advices from Nantes and Dunkirk announce the arrival at those Ports of several vessels with large parcels of Coffee. This news cannot fail to send down prices.

execute your order, as we conceive very satisfactorily. Of the cargo per la Dorade, we have bought 250 sacks of fine quality, agreeable to sample No. 5 at the price of We had several sacks opened for our inspection and fully ascertained that the parcel was without deviation from the sample. The other 150 sacks from the cargo of l'Ernestine are of a less advantageous selection: there are some damaged sacks, which have been duly allowed for. On the whole these Coffees are good and at the price of . . . . which we have paid for them, they will perhaps be more readily saleable than the 250 sacks.
