and endorsed it to Messrs. Hill, Brockman & Co. my agents in Sourabaya to receive the goods from Messrs. Adam & Co. the agents for the Maria Elisabeth. By the steamer daily expected from Java I hope to receive some intelligence respecting their arrival at Sourabaya, and of their having been shipped again for Koepang, without being entered at the Custom House, which is to be avoided and if possible, to store the goods in entrepot till forwarded. I remain of opinion that in case there is no direct opportunity for Koepang, it would be advisable to ship them, via Macassar (which is a free port) to the care of my agent there Mr. J. G. Weyergang who will easily forward them without unpacking. Respecting the description of articles you have sent per Maria Elisabeth. I am on the whole, well satisfied, I miss however the principal staple articles of trade for which I wrote, Powder and Muskets (no occasion for bayonets). The Swords at that price might also be increased to 200, and the Spears to 200. We have had from October to January no less than 8 Vessels from Cardiff and Sunderland touching here on their way to China. There have also arrived at Macassar about 6 vessels from Europe, generally Hamburgh or Holland, so that I believe it may be possible to send me a shipment either direct or by way of Macassar in future.

The Steamer has just arrived bringing your invoice of 48 packages and S pigs lead, forwarded from Sourabaya by Messrs. Hill, Brockman & Co.

Their charges I copy as a proof that it is much better to ship by way of Macassar than by Java.

I remain yours very sincerely

DANIEL J. BAKER.

337. Eastern Produce. Advice of Shipment of Hides, and Draft.

Mr. James Samuelson, London.

Dear Sir.

Since we last had the pleasure (as per enclosed duplicate) we have been favoured with yours of the 29th Feb., and have noted your fresh orders for produce, which will have our best attention. In Rattans we continue unable to do any thing further, on account of the difficulty of obtaining tonnage as dunnage, and we fear with you, that we shall never be able to get many shipped, but will not lose any opportunity that offers. Regarding Ramee Fibre, we have written you in a former letter of its not being brought from the West Coast; we will however bring the article to the notice of the Chinese and advise you if it is imported at any time hereafter.

We now beg to enclose Invoice amounting to $ 679 of 512 in No. weighing Pls. 105. 31 Buffalo Hides, shipped per Corsair's Bride on your account, and for cost of which we have valued on you in our draft No. 2,965 favour ourselves, at 6 months, for £167.3 s 6d as per Memo. at foot, to which please give your protection. Without any thing further at present we refer you for market information to our Prices-current herewith and

338. Report on Eastern Produce.

Pinang, 8th June 1864.

Mr. Richard Brown, London.

Dear Sir.

Enclosed are duplicates of our letters by last mail, and we have now to own receipt of yours of the 25th April, contents of which are noted, but your order for black Pepper having been executed, your instructions to reduce limits, have come too late. We are unable to ship the ton of tin for Messrs. Shaw & Fisher at £116 cost, freight and insurance, or make any other purchases at the limits we have from you. At the present moment there is no tonnage available for London.

Our Market for Produce has become quieter during the past few days, especially for tin, and Exchange is also on the decline. For full information we refer you to our Prices-Current by this mail and

We last had the pleasure on the 9th ult. as per duplicate herewith, and are since in receipt of your esteemed favour of the 8th idem. We note that you do not care about having hides now, which is well, as the season is not fit for shipping the article. We presume that we are to consider

your order for Cocoa as cancelled, since you say that you are not buying it just yet.

We shall continue to be on the look-out for an opportunity to ship Piassava on your account, but as already advised, such opportunities do not very often present themselves. Black Pepper continues to be wanted and we regret we had none here to avail of at remunerative price. For general information we call your attention to the enclosed market report and remain, Dear Sir

Yours very truly

340. Report on Indian Produce. Invoice and draft.

Calcutta, June 13th 1864.

Mr. James Robinson, London.

Dear Sir.

Our last respects were of 8th inst., since which your favour of 10th ult. has safely reached us, and contents command our careful attention.

Castor Oil. We scarcely know whether to treat the present order for 150 cases at Liverpool if at C. F. & I. 44 d, or 100 do. at 41⁄2 d, or 50 do. at 44 d, and same quantity to London, as a fresh one, it corresponding so exactly with that of your favour of 10th April last, 100 Boxes of which we have alone been able to fill; however as you add "Cancel all former orders," we have done so, and entered this as a new one, although we must tell you, we do not see the slightest chance of arriving at even your highest limit of 43⁄4 d, for at all events some time to come, seeds being very scarce and dear, and stocks low in consequence. Todays rate may be quoted Rs. 11. 4 to Rs. 11. 8 with a firm upward tendency.

Saltpetre. Although the excitement caused in our Borax consequent on the late report from your side of an advance of 2s per cwt. has somewhat subsided, still rates are well maintained, and we cannot do better in filling your present small order for 5 tons than Rs. 8. 10 pr. md., at which rate we have accepted a contract, and will ship it to Liverpool as directed when ready. In part completion of purchase last advised you of, we have now the pleasure of enclosing

Invoice of B. S. S. & Co. in diamond, 63 Barrels Borax pr. Kinyor to Liverpool, amounting to Rs. 2934. 12. 6 ex 2/6 11/16 6 m. st. £301. 17s 9 d. Invoice of C. S. S. & Co. in diamond 50 cases 6 s oil per do. amtg. to Rs. 1393. 13 ex do. £143. 7s 6 d. Documents of both of which we have placed with the Oriental Bank Corporation and recommend the drafts to your kind care on presentation.

Tincal. The 125 bags advised in last having taken a s./o. per Kinyor is now packing, the Invoice of which shall be enclosed to you by mail steamer of 22nd inst., as well as perhaps balance of the purchase, if we can get a s./o. by another hence in time to complete documents for that opportunity. As expected, this article has advanced in price and nothing under R. 10. 10 to 11 is obtainable. We have seen a very fine sample this morning of 100 Hhds. not yet landed, R. 11 is asked for it, we have offered R. 10. 12 and if we get it shall brand the bags A. R., as directed, when a very fine parcel was to be met with.-It is quite free from oil and the crystals look very fine.

India Rubber. We have been unable to do any thing, price having advanced 2s per Md. the last few days.

Shell-Lac. Not having received muster or any further particulars in your letter under reply, we can do nothing towards fulfilment of your order for 5 Cases for Messrs. Simmons & Co. We remain Dear Sir

Yours faithfully

E. SMILES & CO.
