SEVERAL TRIALS

OF THE REVEREND

DAVID BARCLAY,

Before the Presbytery of New-Brunswick, with their Judgment at

OXFORD.

AN APPEAL

TO THE SYNOD OF NEW YORK, AND NEW JERSEY; WITH THEIR
JUDGMENT IN THE CITY OF
NEW YORK.

REMANDED

By the Synod, to the Presbytery of New Brunswick; with their
Judgment, at
HACKETTSTOWN:

AND

A VOTE OF CENSURE

ON JACOB KERR, ONE OF THE COMPLAINANTS.

BY JACOB KERR.

Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy,
and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God unto the shepherds, wo
be unto the shepherds of Israel, that do feed themselves; should not
the shepherds feed the flocks? Ezekiel xxxiv, 2.

Nevertheless, I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast
left thy first love; remember, therefore, from whence thou art fallen,
and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee
quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou
repent. Revelation ii, 4, 5.

PREFACE.

WITH the greatest diffidence I submit the contents of this book to the Public, well knowing my great deficiency, both in talents and education, to render myself an acceptable author: nor should I have published the work, unless it had become indispensably necessary, in order to correct and repel the many misrepresentations industriously circulated, the tendency of which were, to criminate and asperse my character, as well as the character of those connected with me, as complainants ;-and to correct the many falsities propagated against respectable persons, who bore testimony against the Rev. David Bar. clay, before the Presbytery of New Brunswick, by perverting the testimony into various shapes, to answer their own diabolical purposes. "For whilst one saith, I am of Paul, and another, I am of Apollos," 1 Cor. iii, 4, there will be misrepresentations, and divisions; and some individuals must suffer in reputation, unjustly. "But there were false prophets also among you, and many shall follow their pernicious ways, by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of," 2 Peter ii, 1, 2; and above all, is to be considered the false gloss, and dark shade cast on the religion of Jesus. Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven giv. en, among men, whereby we must be saved.' Acts iv, 12.

I should have left this subject unnoticed, had the Presbytery of Hackettstown memory, acted with that kind of decorum by which great, dignified, and impartial judges should always be actuated.

And had it not been for the unjust vote of censure on me, for stating Mr. Barclay's crimes in order before them, and also that many people are unenlightened as to this dark subject, and ignorant of the important nature of the charges the evidence adduced-the partial
