ORDER OF DIVINE SERVICE,

FOR THE FORENOON OF THE

FIFTH SUNDAY OF THE MONTH.

[The Minister standing: the Congregation sitting.]

Minister.-Let us Worship and Glorify God, with all solemnity, and in spirit, and in truth.

[ocr errors]

Let us

[blocks in formation]

Minister.-Thy will be done on earth, as it is done

in heaven.

Congregation. Amen.

Minister. Give us this day our daily bread.
Congregation. Amen.

Minister-Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Congregation.-Amen.

Minister.-Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Congregation. Amen.

Minister.-Thine, O Lord, is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory,-for ever, and ever,-amen. Congregation.-Amen, and amen.

[All rise, and stand.]

Minister.-Let us sing to the praise and the glory of God:-" Show Pity &c." [pronouncing the two first lines of the following hymn :-or, referring to some other, and pronouncing the two first lines of it.]

1. Show pity Lord; O Lord forgive!
Let a repenting rebel live:

Are not thy mercies large and free?
May not a sinner trust in Thee?

2. My crimes are great, but not surpass
The power and glory of thy grace:
Great God, thy nature hath no bound,
So let thy pardoning love be found.

3. O wash my soul from every sin,
And make my guilty conscience clean;
Here on my heart the burden lies,
And past offences pain my eyes.

4. My lips with shame my sins confess,
Against thy law, against thy grace;
Lord, should thy judgment grow severe,
I am condemned, but Thou art clear.

5. Should sudden vengeance seize my breath,
I must pronounce Thee just in death;
And if my soul were sent to hell,
Thy righteous law approves it well.

6. Yet save a trembling sinner, Lord,
Whose hope, still hovering round thy word
Would light on some sweet promise there,
Some sure support against despair.

[Still standing.]

Minister.-Let us Pray.

[All kneel.]

Minister. O Lord God, to whom mercies belong, have merey upon us, thy sinful creatures: have mercy upon us, O God: have mercy upon us, for we are greatly guilty before thee.

Congregation.-Lord, have mercy upon us, for we are greatly guilty before thee.

Minister. Thou hast no pleasure, O God, in the death of the wicked, as thy word assures us. Enter not then into judgment with us, O our God, but have mercy upon us. O have mercy upon us, we most earnestly beseech thee.

Congregation.-Lord have mercy upon us, we most earnestly beseech thee.

Minister. Lord God Almighty, we have grievously sinned against thee. We confess it, O God, and we confess it to our shame: we have indeed grievously sinned against thee.

Congregation.-Lord God, we have indeed grievously sinned against thee.

Minister-Which of thy commandments, O God, have we not broken. Truly we have broken them all: every one of them condemns us.

Congregation.-Lord God, we have broken all thy

commandments.

Minister.-Lord God Almighty, we should have rendered up our hearts unto thee entire: we should

have had no other God, but thee alone, our Creator and our Benefactor. We should have loved thee, the Lord our God, with all our heart, and with all our soul, and with all our mind, and with all our strength. But, O God, how grievously have we erred and gone astray from this thy law of love. Lord God, surely we are idolatrous children before thee.

Congregation.-Lord God, surely we are idolatrous children before thee.

Minister. O Lord God, we should have loved our neighbour as ourselves, for this is thy holy commandment unto us. But, O God, we have loved ourselves only. We have often, and in many ways, disregarded, and disesteemed, and despised, and injured our neighbour. O God, we have broken thy commandment of love, and we are truly guilty before thee

Congregation.-Lord God, we have broken thy commandment of love, and we are truly guilty before

thee.

Minister. O Lord God, thou didst send into our world the Son of thy love, the Lord Jesus Christ, to teach us thy Royal Law of Love,-of love to thee, and love to our neighbour,—and, by his life and his death, to imprint and enforce this law upon our understandings and our hearts, that it might never be forgotten, and might ever be chief in our thoughts and in our actions. But, O God, though we know all this, and have believed all this; yet, O Lord God, we have forgotten all, and have broken all, and we are indeed verily and most truly guilty before thee.

Congregation.-O Lord, we are verily and most truly guilty before thee.

Minister.-Lord God, what shall we do? O Lord God, what shall we do? Lord God Almighty, what should we do-what can we do-but come unto thee. O Lord God, we do come unto thee: witness us now before thee we fall into the hands of the Lord, for

very tender are thy mercies. Lord, have mercy upon us: Lord, have mercy upon us, we very earnestly beseech thee.

for

Congregation.-Lord God, we fall into thy hands very tender are thy mercies. O have mercy upon us: have mercy upon us, we very earnestly beseech

thee.

Minister.

But, can the Lord show and extend his mercy to us? Can the Lord make the punishment we deserve pass away from us?-Can he forgive us, and be just? Yes! O God: yes, O God, Thou art the Just God, and the Saviour,-Thou art just, and the justifier of him who believeth in thy Son Jesus Christ O Lord God, have mercy upon us, for the sake of thy Beloved Son the Lord Jesus Christ.

Congregation.-Lord God, have mercy upon us, through thy Beloved Son Jesus Christ.

Minister.-Lord God of Mercy-God of LoveGod of Compassion-God of Pardon-God of Grace and of Peace, we lift up our eyes to thee from the dust, because thou hast given us hope, the hope of mercy, of pardon, and peace. O Lord God, grant unto us indeed, mercy, and pardon, and peace, through thine Only and Beloved Son Jesus Christ.

Congregation.-Lord God, grant unto us indeed, mercy, and pardon, and peace, through thine Only and Beloved Son Jesus Christ.

Minister. We thank thee, O God, and we adore thee, that in thy divine arrangements, thy Beloved Son Jesus Christ gave his life a ransom for sinners— that he shed his blood for them--and that, by the one offering of his Blessed Self, he hath made a full and complete atonement for sin. Glory to thy name, O God, for this wonderful and glorious plan of displaying thy Justice and thy Mercy.

Congregation-Glory, to thy name, O God, for
