Jesus said unto his disciples, I/have many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now, (john xvi. 12 and again he said, The time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall Show you plainly of the Father. (john xvi. Here then, are promises to communicate higher in formation respecting important truths, than had been previously made that which was necessary for their reception was a suit ability of state on the part of man. We do not now inquire what these things were, which the Lord had to say, nor whether the promise, to Show the Father plainly, has been actually fulfilled; because, before this could be done satisfactorily, it would be proper to inquire into the nature of the condition which was neces sary, and whether that condition has been attained by society. Our object in adducing these passages, is to show, from the Author of Christianity himself, that light is not only an essential part of Christian existence, but also, that its purer brilliance was to be a progressive development. Every one knows, that the virtues of Christianity result from cultivation, and that they are successive gifts and growths; and to say, that the wisdom of Christianity is not attainable by the same process, is to assert what all experience contradicts.
