This is such unadulterated drivel that it is hard to know what to refute first. Gardener claims that excavations in Mesopotamia have revealed texts which contradict the bible. I suppose a sample of the nonsense in this book will suffice:
He claims that these texts reveal an alternate history in which dragons, the grail and the bloodline of David and Jesus are somehow muddled together. NOT ONE cuneiform tablet deals with a divine bloodline, there are no dragons (the mus-hus called a 'dragon' by Gardener is a snake and it is neither divine nor is any snake substance involved in any religious or investiture ceremony). After more than a century of scholarship in this field there is not any written evidence of any sort of investiture ceremony for the kings of the very diverse cultures that occupied Mesopotamia over the THOUSANDS of years in which written evidence is available before the bible. He claims evidence that humanity was created 'under the sands' of Mesopotamia when in fact the only myth to address creation was a late propaganda composition and depicts the creation of mankind from the blood of a murdered mutinous god and dirt as a means of relieving the gods of their need to do the agricultural labor necessary to feed themselves! Hardly an auspicious beginning for our race and clearly not a story which reveals a race of kings!
The truth is that the immense body of texts which have been recovered is very revealing. They reveal people very much like ourselves involved with trade and loans, marriages and inheritances. The literature contains proverbs, incantations (often to ease sickness) and hymns and just a few of what we call myths. Most of these myths were composed in later times to justify a political aim of one king or another and none are in the least revealing of 'secrets' of creation.
The most charitable thing that can be said about Gardener is that he has most probably not read the texts he cites. Do not waste your time reading this derivative poppycock. If the reader likes fantasy try The Lord of the Rings. At least it has the ring of ultimate truth.
